Where to look for Fossils at Hodgson How Quarry

(Hodgson How Quarry) - 2004

When you first enter the quarry there are three main areas that are visable. The centre of the quarry is overgrown with trees and plants, the expores here are covered up.

To the right of the quarry is clean rock, here the Skiddaw beds are extremly hard but also unfossiliferious zones.

To the left of the quarry is a section of beds that dip 60 degrees. As you get closer, you will notice shales that have either slipped or have been caused by past collectores in search of graptolites. These pile on the scree slopes.

The Graptolites are found within the 'brown/orange' layers between the blue and gray. There is normally graptolites lying around on the scree slopes which can also be collected. There are two types of graptolites here. The best zones are those situated further into the quarry.
